Our Breakfasts and Homemade Cakes

Amanda is a registered nutritionist as well as co-owner of Haven Cottage, which means our focus is on providing our guests with food that not only tastes great, but does you good as an added benefit. Whether you are planning on climbing a mountain, or taking in the views at a more sedate pace, our guests can choose from an extensive menu of breakfast options – including fresh fruit and berries, fresh smoothie, pastries, homemade granola, Cumbrian sausages, and smoked salmon – all types of diets, intolerances and allergies are happily catered for. We strive to source our ingredients from local, quality suppliers wherever we can, so you can enjoy the best the Lakes have to offer, including Winter Tarn Dairy butter, produced in Cumbria from grass fed cattle, eggs sourced from The Lakes Free Range Egg Company, sausages from our local butchers in Ambleside, and bacon from Askerton Castle Organic Estate.

Every afternoon we serve complimentary homemade cake to our guests, by the fire in our cosy guest lounge. Taste comes first and our cakes get rave reviews, but we like to include ingredients that will improve flavour and add nourishment where we can.

If you are interested in the specific nutritional benefits of each of the local ingredients we source, you can find more information at Happier You Nutrition.

Some kind words from

A real and rare little gem

“Ideal location. Great views. Homely atmosphere. Luxury accommodation. Well prepared and delectable breakfast. Great care and attention to detail.

Mark has an encylopaedic knowledge of the area and is on hand to discuss and recommend suitable walks and activities in the area. Without this we probably would not have done the walk from Ambleside to Grasmere which was one of the highlights of our stay.

We can only thank Amanda and Mark for their hospitality and we have already booked our next visit to Haven Cottage. Can’t wait!”

Another fantastic few days at Haven Cottage, Ambleside!

“We can’t recommend Haven Cottage highly enough; it really is a special place. We have previously stayed in Suite 4 and this time we had Suite 8. Both are beautiful. The Infamous Room 8 has the added benefit of a balcony – and the weather was superb so we made full use of this. Breakfast couldn’t be faulted (freshly baked bread and high quality local produce) and homemade cakes were also served each afternoon in the lounge. Mark and Amanda were the perfect hosts and would do anything for us. We’re already looking for the next dates we can come. Thank you!”

Absolute Gem of a B&B

“Lovely warm welcome on arrival, Amanda showed us around the B&B and to our room. We appreciated the anniversary card and chocolates. Room 4 was beautiful and clean and homely. Bed and bedding very comfy we had best sleep ever. Toiletries smelt divine and lovely thick white towels off the radiator to wrap yourself in after a nice warm soak in the bath. Breakfast was impressive and locally sourced and tasted amazing.

Amanda & Mark make perfect hosts very knowledgeable of the area. We have booked again Haven Cottage is an absolute gem.”

Wonderful stay, highly recommended

“We stayed in Suite 4 last week for 3 nights. It was absolutely fabulous. Both the bedroom and the attached sitting room were beautifully appointed and immaculate. The super king size bed was very comfortable with lovely views from the bedroom window. Bathrobes, fluffy towels, quality toiletries with an added bonus of a roll top bath which was very welcome following our long walks.

Home made cakes every day were delicious and very much appreciated. Breakfast was high quality with plenty of choice.

Mark and Amanda are wonderful hosts and we would definitely book again.”

Fab Haven Cottage

“I bought my Mum to stay, I had been before with the old owners and I am pleased to say that you won’t be disappointed if you are coming back as a returning guest. We stayed in suite 4 and having the extra space is lovely. We were very well looked after and Amanda and Mark are settling in well, very friendly and can give good local advice. Breakfast is ordered the night before and fantastic. Being able to park and not worry about driving anywhere is an extra bonus. We had a lovely stay and would visit again.”

Lovely, homely place to stay in Ambleside

“We first vistied 3 years ago for our anniversary. We have been booked in to go again every year but it has been postpobed due to COVID. Finally, this year, we made it! The owners have changed, but otherwise its still the same. We had “room 8″, which has lovely views out to the fells from its own private balcony. Also, a huge bathroom with freestanding bath.

The new owners were just as welcoming as the last. Helping us plan our day walk and even checking when we didn’t return (we had headed straight to the pub for a much needed drink after a faboulous walk around the Fairfield Horseshoe!). They set us up for the day with a fantastic cooked breakfast. This is a fabulous place to stay and, as a bonus, is less than 5 minute walk into Ambleside.”
